minQiu Ke-Yan, a modern pawnbroker, lost a bet to the Cheng Huo-Chang, owner of a traditional pawnshop, and has to work for Huo-Chang for two months, during which they develop a friendship as they debate over the value of pawn items. Loggerheads when they first met, Ke-Yan develops a liking for Huo-Chang's daughter Yi-Cheng, but soon realised that his father has feuds with Huo-Chang.
